21 Suffer Burns in Tony Robbins Firewalk in San Jose | Personal ...
Motivational speaker Tony Robbins regularly inspires guests at events to participate in a firewalk in order to empower themselves in life, but on July 19 the event lead to the injuries of 21 people. Out of those who suffered burn injuries, three individuals were taken to the hospital, according to CBS San Francisco.
As part of the speaker?s ?Unleash the Power Within? event, approximately 6,000 people took part in the ?Firewalk Experience,? where they walk over 10 feet of hot coals. While organizers of the event are focusing on how many were not injured by the event, 21 people had some level of burns, mostly to their feet. On-site medical teams provided treatment to those who were injured, but three called 9-1-1 and were taken to the hospital for what were deemed second- and third-degree burns.
Additionally, 9-1-1 calls were placed later that day from those who were continuing to suffer the effects of the burns after receiving treatment, but the exact number was not released. Tony Robbins has been incorporating the firewalk into his events for almost three decades, with the coals being advertised as ranging between 1,200 and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit during the event.

NASA Mars Orbiter Repositioned to Phone Home Mars Landing
NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft has successfully adjusted its orbital location to be in a better position to provide prompt confirmation of the August landing of the Curiosity rover.
The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) spacecraft carrying Curiosity can send limited information directly to Earth as it enters Mars' atmosphere. Before the landing, Earth will set below the Martian horizon from the descending spacecraft's perspective, ending that direct route of communication. Odyssey will help to speed up the indirect communication process.
NASA reported during a July 16 news conference that Odyssey, which originally was planned to provide a near-real-time communication link with Curiosity, had entered safe mode July 11. This situation would have affected communication operations, but not the rover's landing. Without a repositioning maneuver, Odyssey would have arrived over the landing area about two minutes after Curiosity landed.
A spacecraft thruster burn Tuesday lasting about six seconds has nudged Odyssey about six minutes ahead in its orbit. Odyssey now is operating normally, and confirmation of Curiosity's landing is expected to reach Earth at about 10:31 p.m. PDT Aug. 5, as originally planned.
"Information we are receiving indicates the maneuver has been completed as planned," said Gaylon McSmith, Mars Odyssey project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in Pasadena, Calif. "Odyssey has been working at Mars longer than any other spacecraft, so it is appropriate that it has a special role in supporting the newest arrival."
Two other Mars orbiters, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and the European Space Agency's Mars Express, also will be in position to receive radio transmissions from MSL during its descent. However, they will be recording information for later playback. Only Odyssey can relay information immediately.
Odyssey arrived at Mars in 2001. In addition to its own scientific observations, it has served as a communications relay for NASA's Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers and the Phoenix lander. Spirit and Phoenix are no longer operational. Odyssey and MRO will provide communication relays for Curiosity during the rover's two-year prime mission.

Rail authority rejected proposal because of low ridership projection
Despite concerns that ridership projections may not justify the expense, the city of Apple Valley wants to spend $2.37 million to build a skyway connecting two bus rapid transit stations on busy Cedar Avenue.
The skyway would link northbound and southbound stations to be built just north of the Cedar Avenue and 147th Street intersection as part of the 16-mile Cedar Avenue Bus Rapid Transit line, which is scheduled to go into service in early 2013.
The Cedar Avenue BRT line, a first for the state, will bring high-speed buses from Lakeville to the Mall of America in Bloomington. State bonding and federal highway funds are paying for the bulk of the $112 million project.
Apple Valley officials say the skyway needs to be added to the 147th Street station so that bus riders can safely cross Cedar Avenue, which is nine lanes wide and sees around 50,000 vehicles a day. They also argue that it should be built now, while the station area is under construction, to avoid future disruptions and higher costs.
?In our mind, we thought this project should have been incorporated from day one,? Apple Valley City Administrator Tom Lawell said Tuesday.
The Dakota County Regional Rail Authority and the Metropolitan Council are partners on the BRT line and are putting $1.6 million into the construction of the 147th Street station. Plans for the skyway were left out of the final design after rail authority officials determined there would not be enough riders to justify the expense.
They anticipate 207 passengers will board the BRT line every day at the 147th Street station and say that a skyway will not be needed until 2020 at the earliest.
Even so, a proposed agreement between the rail authority, the Met Council and Apple Valley would allow the city to build the skyway at its own expense and to recoup the costs if ridership exceeds projections. The city expects the skyway to cost up to $2.37 million, though bids could come in lower.
The city would also assume the skyway?s operating costs, estimated at up to $55,000 a year.
If more than 600 people are using the station every day before 2018, Apple Valley would be fully reimbursed by Dakota County over a five-year period, according to the proposed agreement. If more than 600 riders use the station every day between 2019 and 2030, the city would be repaid 8 percent of the capital costs annually through 2030.
If the daily ridership goal isn?t met, the city would not be repaid. City officials have yet to decide how they will pay for the skyway, but say the general fund could be used.
The hope is to get bids by September and to begin work this fall so that the project is finished before the BRT line goes into service next year.
Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland said she thinks the ridership goal can be met within five to 10 years based on the use of a park-and-ride transit station built by the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority at 155th Street. Apple Valley officials hope to add two levels of parking there because of high use, bringing the number of spaces from 750 to 950.
The skyway ? like the in-ground rail lines being installed on the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line ? is also a sign of permanence that should inspire confidence in developers and business owners who see the transitway as an asset, Hamann-Roland said.
?This is a corridor of opportunity, and we have to have some vision and commitment,? she said.
A BRT station at 140th Street will not include a skyway, though one could be added later if the area becomes more developed, Hamann-Roland said.
The Met Council on Wednesday will also consider a grant agreement with the Dakota County Regional Rail Authority that would allow the council to take the lead on a number of projects that need to be completed before service begins.
The agreement would put the Met Council in charge of installing signs, ticket vending machines and a signal priority system at a cost of around $1 million. The agency would also lead a $100,000 marketing campaign for the Cedar Avenue BRT line.

GM Canada to make research and development announcement at Oshawa facility
OSHAWA, Ont. - GM Canada plans to announce an investment in Canadian research and development at its complex in Oshawa, Ont., on Tuesday.
Kevin Williams, president of GM Canada will deliver the news at the company's Canadian Engineering Centre.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper, federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty are among the politicians who will attend the event.
The Oshawa plant builds many GM models ? from the Impala and Camaro to the Chevrolet Equinox and Buick Regal ? and employs more than 4,500 people.
GM Canada declined to provide more details about the event.
Last August, the company announced a $117 million investment at the assembly plant to prepare it to build the new Cadillac XTS.
The Oshawa assembly plant has had major changes in the last two year, with new vehicle models and expanded production that has added two new shifts and 1,300 jobs.
The federal and Ontario governments invested a total of $10.5 billion in GM Canada in 2009 as the automaker struggled to survive the economic downturn.
In Canada, the company shut down a truck plant in Oshawa and a transmission plant in Windsor, Ont., and cut its workforce.
Since the restructuring, GM has eliminated all but four of its brands and has transformed itself into a much leaner, more profitable company.
GM Canada employs about 10,000 people at its Ontario-based operations. The company operates assembly plants in Oshawa and Ingersoll and parts plants in St. Catharines.

Can't decide if you want a wired or wireless pair of headphones, or one with active noise cancellation or without? If you've got the cash, you can have it all with the Sennheiser MM 550-X ($499.95 direct), an extremely well designed set that covers practically every situation you'd ever encounter. But even so, this headphone pair is still an easy recommendation.
Design, Accessories, and Controls
The MM 550-X is a closed, around-the-ear design, and weighs 6.3 ounces with the battery inserted. Both the earcups and the headband are heavily padded, and the soft padding feels quite comfortable. You get quite a lot of passive noise cancelling just from the tight seal the earcups form with the MM 550-X on your head. The headset is also a bit lighter than some larger pairs of wired headphones, like the venerable Sennheiser HD 650 ($499.95, 5 stars) and the Bose QuietComfort 15 ($299.95, 4 stars). Even so, it feels quite rugged; the plastic, folding hinges in the headband and around the earcups in particular look especially sturdy.?
Sennheiser packs in a number of accessories. In addition to the headphones themselves and the rechargeable battery, you get a USB charging cable, a power plug with adapters for different countries, a stereo audio cable (2.5mm to 3.5mm) for use in wired mode, a 1/4-inch headphone adapter, an in-flight adapter for use with double mono jacks on airplanes, and a rugged, zippered cloth carrying case. The manual comes as a PDF file burned onto an included CD-ROM.
The controls are extremely easy to use even with the headphones on your ear. The center of the oversize five-way control-pad on the right earcup is large enough for an entire fingertip, and features a raised plastic circle around it, so that you can't miss it. Top and bottom control the volume, while left and right skip to the next track in either direction, all on devices that support remote control over Bluetooth. You can also hold down the Skip buttons to fast-forward or rewind the track. The bottom of the right earcup houses Bluetooth, NoiseGuard, and SRS buttons (more on these in a moment), as well as a 2.5mm jack for using the headphones in a wired configuration. The left earcup only has a covered micro USB charger port.
Hold down the multifunction button for five seconds, and the MM 550-X goes into pairing mode. You'll never miss that; not only does the control pad pulse red and blue, but the SRS and Bluetooth buttons light up as well. I had no problem pairing the MM 550-X with an Apple iPhone 4. The Multifunction button also handles accepting, rejecting, and ending calls, and you can transfer the ongoing call between the phone and the headphones?or activate voice dialing by pressing and holding the Bluetooth button.

Sennheiser's big pitch with the MM 550-X is apt-X audio encoding, which the company claims delivers wireless audio quality that is indistinguishable from the highest quality wired connection. Here's the trick, though: It only works if the sound source also supports apt-X. My iPhone 4 doesn't, but even so, I heard pristine audio in both wired and wireless modes. Both modes sounded virtually identical. I heard the tiniest bit of compression artifacts in wireless mode, in a slightly more closed soundstage and a touch of occasional harshness, but I had to strain to hear it.
Aside from that, sound quality was excellent overall. In The Knife's "Silent Shout," our standard bass test track, I heard a touch of distortion at top volumes, but none at normal listening levels?or even beyond. The overall sonic signature was warm, with a full-bodied low-end, exceptional low-end extension, a smooth midrange, and airy highs that didn't stick out but were still full of detail. On Queen of the Stone Age's "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret," it was easy to hear the multiple guitars and other instruments across the soundstage, while the rhythm section still had plenty of punch.
Pressing and holding the NoiseGuard button for two seconds activates the MM 550-X's active noise compensation system. It does this via a pair of tiny mics near the earcups that focus on ambient noise in the 20Hz to 1KHz range, and then use this noise as a template for generating an opposite wave, 180 degrees out of phase, to cancel the noise out. Press and hold a second time, and you'll turn NoiseGuard off.
With NoiseGuard on, the MM 550-X did a nice job of muting some strong office fans of various sizes. But you could still hear them more than you could with, say, the Bose QuietComfort 15. My main issue with NoiseGuard, though, was the reduction in fidelity; it turned the MM 550-X into an average pair of headphones you could buy for about $50, in terms of sound quality. The warmth disappeared, I heard the typical artifacts in the midrange that often betray active noise compensation, and nearly all of the MM 550-X's marvelous bass extension vaporized. Bose QuietComfort models are by no means musically neutral, but they seem to do a better job of compensating for the active noise cancellation circuitry.
TalkThrough, Other Features, and Conclusions
The TalkThrough function takes the audio recorded from the tiny mics and actually pumps it in the earcups. This way, you can hear what's going on around you without removing the headset, while still filtering out more distant background noise. You activate this by just briefly pressing the NoiseGuard button, instead of holding it down. When you do this, it pauses the music so you can talk to someone in the room; turn off TalkThrough, and the music will begin playing again.
Meanwhile, the SRS button is, well, as the SRS button. With SRS WOW HD engaged, the highs are exaggerated in the 5KHz region, as if you're listening to a cassette on a car stereo, with little top-end air or detail around them. The button also amplifies the bass even further, but with extra mud, as if the "bass" control on a cheap mini system is turned up without much in the way of granularity. My recommendation: Leave it off.
In my tests, MM 550-X wasn't that great at handling voice calls. I heard the other caller, but their voice sounded computerized, and I could barely hear my own words because of the tight seal of the earcups. I was hoping TalkThrough would be a good workaround for this problem, but if you activate it during a voice call, it does the same thing as it does with the music?it mutes the audio source and turns on the external mics, so you can't hear the caller anymore.
According to Sennheiser, the battery should provide 8 hours of continuous listening with Bluetooth and NoiseGuard (active noise cancellation) enabled, 10 hours over Bluetooth without NoiseGuard, and 20 hours in wired mode with NoiseGuard activated. It will last forever in wired mode without noise cancellation, because then it works just like a regular pair of headphones. The LED indicator flashes red when the battery is almost dead.
One other minor quirk: You need to take care when disconnecting the micro USB charging cable. Otherwise, you'll pull the battery clear out of the left ear cup, which isn't good if you don't notice it, and then leave the house without the battery inside. But there's a reason for this design: You can charge the battery pack either when it's inside the earcup or out, since the battery itself contains the micro USB charger port.
Overall, the Sennheiser MM 550-X is an extremely flexible set of headphones. You're paying for all of this technology, of course, and not all of the money is going into the actual sound quality. The MM 550-X sound good enough that you'll feel like it's money well spent, especially when using it wirelessly. Its active noise cancellation, while not class leading, is still fairly effective; if you want the best and don't need a wireless pair, the AKG K 490 NC ($249.95, 4.5 stars) or the older Bose QuietComfort 15 will still perform better there. If you don't specifically need Bluetooth compatibility or active noise cancellation, the Sennheiser RS 220 ($599.95, 4.5 stars) remains our Editors' Choice for high-end wireless headphones, with its stellar sound and comfort, although it is really designed for home use. The Sennheiser MM 100 ($149.95, 3.5 stars) is a more affordable and practical wireless option that still delivers solid performance. And if you don't mind an in-ear design, the wireless Sony XBA-BT75 ($299.99, 3.5 stars) sounds good and is very easy to tote, although it's still a little big when compared with standard stereo earphones.

Working toward an AIDS-free generation
ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? Ending the global HIV/AIDS pandemic may be possible by implementing a multifaceted global effort that expands testing, treatment, and prevention programs, as well as meets the scientific challenges of developing an HIV vaccine and possibly a cure, according to a Viewpoint in the July 25 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on HIV/AIDS.
Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Bethesda, Md., presented the article at a JAMA media briefing at the International AIDS Conference.
Dr. Fauci and co-author Gregory K. Folkers, M.S., M.P.H., also of the NIAID, write that "since the first cases of what is now known as AIDS were reported in 1981, an entire generation has grown up under the constant cloud of this modern-day plague. Across the globe, more than 34 million people are living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, including approximately 1.2 million individuals in the United States. HIV/AIDS has been responsible for the deaths of an estimated 30 million individuals." They add that although the rate of new HIV infections has declined or stabilized in many countries, the disease continues to exact an enormous toll: 1.8 million deaths in 2010 alone, and grief and hardship for countless families and communities.
Because powerful interventions have been developed and scientifically proven effective, the fight against HIV/AIDS is currently viewed with considerably more optimism than in past years, the authors write. "If these tools are made widely available to those who need them, an AIDS-free generation may be possible -- that is, today's children could one day live in a world in which HIV infections and deaths from AIDS are rare."
Among the most important interventions is combination antiretroviral therapy, which significantly improves the health and longevity of individuals infected with HIV. "Since the advent of antiretroviral therapy, the annual number of deaths due to AIDS has decreased by two-thirds in the United States. Globally, an estimated 700,000 lives were saved in 2010 alone due to the increased availability of antiretroviral therapy in low- and middle-income countries," the authors write. "Important challenges remain -- notably finding the resources and developing the infrastructure to provide antiretroviral therapy to the estimated 8 million individuals with HIV infection who need these drugs but are not receiving them."
The authors add that antiretroviral therapy can also prevent HIV infection by reducing the amount of virus in an infected person's blood and other body fluids, making it less likely that the virus will be transmitted to others. Also, antiretroviral therapy is highly effective in blocking mother-to-child HIV transmission.
Other important interventions include medical male circumcision, which offers a highly effective and durable way to protect heterosexual men from HIV infection; and potentially, pre-exposure prophylaxis with antiretroviral medications, which have shown promise in reducing an individual's risk of acquiring HIV infection.
"Each of these treatment and prevention strategies has a strong evidence base; with further refinement and scale-up and also when used in combination, they could have an extraordinary effect on decreasing the trajectory of the HIV pandemic."
According to the authors, researchers are maintaining focus on 2 key scientific challenges that remain: the development of a vaccine and a cure. They write that modest success in a large-scale clinical trial of an HIV vaccine, promising results in animal models, and advances in structure-based vaccine design suggest that an HIV vaccine is feasible. The prospect of an HIV cure remains challenging.
The authors conclude that ending the global HIV/AIDS pandemic "will require a global commitment of resources involving additional donor countries, strengthening health care systems overall, and fostering greater ownership by host countries of HIV/AIDS effort, including investing more in the health of their people. With collective and resolute action now and a steadfast commitment for years to come, an AIDS-free generation is indeed within reach."

Family Feud Illustrates Importance of Revising Estate Plans Annually

A decision in the case this week also may set a precedent for other cases involving a death in the anomalous tax year of 2010 when the federal government did not levy an estate tax.
In a "tentative" ruling this week, a Superior court judge in Riverside County, Calif., found on behalf of Leonard Tweten, the founder of audio visual company Magnolia Audio Visual, that his two estranged daughters may not receive their late mother's half of the $100 million estate right away. Instead, the estimated $50 million in dispute will remain with their father, who will derive income and other benefits of ownership of the sum contained in a marital trust. The sum will pass to the daughters only on his death.
Attorneys for Leonard Tweten, 85, claim the decision demonstrates that courts will rule to support the intent of A decedent, regardless of technical glitches related to the anomalous tax year. The attorneys add that the case underscores why clients should always reconsider their estate plans annually given the annual flux in estate laws. If they don't, they could end up with fractured relationships among heirs like the Twetens.
"This suit has kind of torn the family in half," says Rodney Lee, an attorney for Leonard Tweten of Palm Desert, Calif., pointing out that even Tweten's relationship with his grandchildren now is ruptured.
"Even the most skilled professionals may be there and it may not dawn on them that your estate plan may change as a result of a change in the law," says Lee, of Ervin Cohen & Jessup in Beverly Hills.
Had Eileen Tweten, Leonard's wife of 58-years and a longtime co-worker in the family company, died in another tax year, no opportunity for such a dispute could have arisen. The fact that she died in 2010 made all the difference.
Typically trusts and wills are constructed so that a portion of the estate equal to the annual estate tax exemption goes into a bypass trust in order to pass directly to the children. Any amount above that which is subject to an estate tax goes into a marital trust for the surviving spouse. The marital trust defers taxation on its contents until the death of the surviving spouse. In this way, and had their mother died in 2008 or 2009, the Twetens' three children (only two of which have sued) would have received the amount of estate tax exemptions available in those years: $2 million in 2008 and $3.5 million in 2009.
However, when the estate tax is zero - as it was in 2010 - all the assets in the estate enter the bypass trust to transfer to the children. Some, but not all, states have passed legislative fixes to the potential problem. California decided not to in order to give people the option of passing assets to the next generation this way, according to the daughters' lawyer, Adam Streisand of Loeb & Loeb in Los Angeles.
Leonard and Eileen Tweten signed their estate planning documents in 2008 after several months of meeting with financial planners and lawyers. Two years later, and just eight days before she passed away, her husband, an attorney and financial planner - Matthew McCutchen, CEO of McCutchen Group in Seattle - gave her an amendment, intending to ensure those funds would pass to Leonard via the marital trust and not enter the bypass trust.
The daughters, now middle-aged, contend that their mother was well aware of the absence of a federal estate tax in 2010 and wanted those funds to pass immediately to them.
"Everybody knew that was the law" in 2010, Streisand says. "The Twetens knew it. This trust simply said give the max amount to my kids and the rest defer into a marital trust until my husband died."
Instead, Streisand says, no one explained what the amendment meant to Eileen Tweten before she signed it in a "terminal delirium," according to Streisand. The daughters allege their father or someone else used "undue influence" to obtain a signature.
Lawyers for the father say this is not the case and that Eileen Tweten was fully aware of what she was doing.
"Their kids just tried to push (a technical loophole) open to take advantage of it," Lee says.
After both parents died, he adds, "The mother wanted the money to go to the kids outright. The father wanted it to go to them in trust. They were both very respectful of each other's views. There was absolutely no evidence that in the off chance that one of them were to die in 2010 that they would take advantage of what some have called 'the home run,'" a term the daughters used in the case to describe the tax opportunity in 2010.

If you are making home improvements near places that require gas lines, be extra cautious. Most gas lines will have a shutoff so that you can turn the gas in the line off. Be sure to turn this off before starting a project near a gas line. If you fail to turn off the line, you could have serious trouble.
A great home improvement method you can use is to actually check your faucets every year and do preventative maintenance on them. This way, you can avoid those annoying leaks and even those major breaks. It might seem like a hassle now, but you?ll be preventing a lot of work in the future.
Using a paste-form of wood filler to fill a hole in wood, that you need to screw into again, will not yield satisfactory results. The screw will cause the wood filler to disintegrate and never hold secure. Instead, break off pieces of wooden toothpicks and fill the hole with as many as it will hold. Put a drop of white or wood glue on top of the toothpicks, that you can break off so that they are flush with the surrounding wood, and allow to dry. When completely dry, replace the screw into your new real wood-filled hole and that will give the screw something to ?bite? into, versus the plaster-like dust, created by typical wood fillers.
These simple tips should have helped you see some new perspectives on home improvement, which will get you thinking creatively about what will work and won?t work in your own home. Learning to think cleverly about how you make improvements will be a valuable skill as you gain experience and tackle more complex home improvement jobs.

Fewer see college as good financial investment

The high cost of tuition has more people questioning whether it?s worth it to go to college, according to a new survey.
Nearly 57 percent of people think college is a good financial investment for young adults these days, according to the survey of 3,000 Americans, which was conducted by Rasmusson Reports on behalf of Country Financial.
That?s down sharply from just four years ago, when 81 percent of people saw college as a good investment. The figure has fallen every year since 2008, the year the financial crisis hit.
This year, about 24 percent said they did not think a higher education was worth the investment, while about 19 percent were unsure.
Women were slightly more likely than men to say college was a good investment despite the rising cost, according to the Country Financial Survey. These days, women also are more likely to go to college than men.
The survey also found that wealthier people were more likely to see college as a good investment than those who make less money.
On the other hand, Americans seem to have a higher tolerance for debt related to education, at least as compared to last year.?For example, last year?61 percent of?those survyed said?$20,000 or less in student loan debt was too much. This?year, just 50 percent thought $20,000 or less would be too much.
When it comes to who should foot the bill, the vast majority of respondents said parents should be responsible for at least part of their kids? college tuition. The results were roughly the same as the previous two years.
The cost of both public and private college educations has been rising steadily?for decades, even when adjusted for inflation, according to the Department of Education.
Meanwhile, some economists have recently started raising alarm bells about the nation?s ballooning student loan debt, which some say has surpassed $1 trillion.
Still, many also caution that if you want a good job in this economy ? or perhaps any job at all - it really pays to have a college degree.? The unemployment rate for college graduates was 4.1 percent in June, compared with 8.4 percent for those with just a high school degree.
