The Windows 8 Sales Data Is In, And It's Horrible ... - Business Insider

NPD research published some horrible news for Microsoft yesterday.

  • Despite releasing an entirely new operating system on October 22 of this year, Windows PC sales shrank 21 percent between 10/21 and 11/17 versus the same period last year.
  • Windows 8 tablet sales during that period were "almost nonexistent" ? just 1 percent of all Windows 8 sales.

?It hasn?t made the market any worse, but it hasn?t stimulated things either,? Stephen Baker, an analyst at NPD, told The New York Times. ?It hasn?t provided the impetus to sales everybody hoped for.?

No kidding.

Yesterday, we reported other bad news:

  • Asus CFO David Chang's?comment that?"demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now."
  • Microsoft?cut its order of Surface tablets for the year to two million units, down from four million.

This is a very scary time for Microsoft.

What's for Me at a Caregiver Support Group? | Elder Care Home ...

?

Caregivers to other frail or cognitively impaired adults very often? become ill themselves and may actually be the one who is at greater RISK! Boca Home Care Services recommends Support Groups for any and all Caregivers ? At least give one a try.

?

Attend a Caregiver Support Group

Whether a case of ?birds of a feather?, ?misery loves company? it just makes sense that speaking with others who have very similar circumstances as your own can be very helpful.

Fortunately there is a lot of information out there for anyone who cares to look. Each major Disease has a foundation??(Parkinson?s. Heart, Diabetes, Paralysis, Arthritis etc.)?of its own which in addition to providing information about the disease, treatment and research, there is likely a Support Group. The information and the ?support? is both for the patient and family/friend network.

Alzheimer?s Disease and other Dementia are a bit different. Due to the cognitive and memory impairment, once the disease has advanced, the patient cannot benefit so much from a support group. It is however the Primary Caregiver and other loved ones who will benefit the most from attending regularly or as needed, a Caregiver Support Group.

Due to the nature of?diseases which affect cognition, judgement and memory, the caregiver must assume the roles that the patient used to manage for him or herself and the household. This is in addition to physical care and management of the person?s needs and schedules.

A Caregiver Support Group is?a community resource. It will usually?have a facilitator (someone knowledgeable about the disease), perhaps a co-facilitator, a regular meeting time and place, some core members, occasional members and newcomers.

You can find a group in your area by contacting the Alzheimer?s Association, Community Services to Seniors, Day Care centers, and Assisted Living Facilities which have?Memory Units. Here in Palm Beach county there are many Caregiver Support Groups sponsored by: FAU Memory & Wellness Center, The Volen Center, Alzheimer?s?Community Care, Jewish Family Service and? the Alzheimer?s Association.

Caregiver Support Groups provide a safe, confidential place for group therapy, information and emotional support ? by others who truly understand your predicament because they are likely living it, have live it or will be.? Most are FREE.

It is the exchange of practical information, i.e. getting your loved one dressed, dealing with repetitive questions, wondering and so forth. How to deal with your loved one when you are exhausted, anxous, and at the end of your rope.

Besides the practical information gleamed on how to manage care, support groups for primary caregivers can help you understand your own complicated feelings about the situation ? the anger, resentment, grief, impatience, frustration and other normal human reactions one can experience when being the primary caregiver.

People often think it is a ?gripe-fest? or ?cry-a thon? when the group is usually about providing support through mutual understanding via similar experiences and a sharing of information, practical and formal. Learning through others about Dementia medications, community resources, experimental studies and other research toward a cure.

Often the raw feelings associated with primary caregivers aren?t on display at a caregiver support group. If they are, the group dynamic is an excellent way to handle it and most likely the facillitator will speak with that person afterwards, lending more support and individualized resources.

If you aren?t comfortable sharing your feelings, then don?t.? Perhaps one day a topic will touch you, perhaps not but either way, the support of others who understand and the information received are valuable enough reasons to give a support group a try.

Boca Home Care Services recommends Caregiver Support groups at every stage of the caregiver experience. There is no pressure to speak or share. Go a few times, as these groups can be very diverse depending on who is there any given meeting and what topics are brought up ? usually by group members.

After a few meetings, if you feel the group really isn?t for you, it may very well not be. You can notify the facilitator and find another group.

The ?support? of the group is both emotional and informational between members. It is also time away from your role as caregiver and a time to even socialize a little.

Group members can help by letting you know things they have tried, and that have worked. One example from a group memberi was _ ?hiring help a few times a week so I could play Bridge, get to my doctor and just stay in bed longer in the morning?.

The beauty of the group dynamic is the therapeutic give and take between attendees. You may surprise yourself, at a meeting, you may be te one?sharing sound advice from your experience as a primary caregiver.

Boy Meets Boy, Jermyn Street Theatre, London

Published Wednesday 28 November 2012 at 12:53 by Paul Vale

Written in 1975, Boy Meets Boy is a sparkling musical comedy set against the backdrop of the abdication crisis in pre-war Britain. The big difference is that this is an alternative 1936, where gay relationships are perfectly acceptable and high society is quivering with excitement at the impending nuptials of Boston millionaire Clarence Cutler and British aristocrat Guy Rose. It?s a bizarre leap to take but writers Bill Solly and Donald Ward take it with impeccable flair, crafting an exquisite pastiche that manages at turns to be both cheerfully sentimental yet vaguely subversive. Solly?s music and witty lyrics pay affectionate homage to the likes of Porter and Berlin while the book, co-written with Ward manages in one fell swoop to put the word ?gay? back into the term ?gay musical comedy?.

Stephen Ashfield brings a sense of worldly realism to the commitment-phobic journalist, Casey O?Brien, breaking as many hearts as he does news stories. O?Brien career as a lothario is finally stalled by Craig Fletcher?s shy, sensitive Guy Rose, a beauty hidden behind geeky spectacles and bad hair. Ashfield and Fletcher make an adorable couple, pulling off the humour of the hilarious It?s A Boy?s Life at the same time as developing a romantic storyline that is as sentimental as it is satisfying. Beyond the romance there is the louche comic delivery of Ben Kavanagh, as jilted groom Clarence Cutler, providing many of the laugh-out-loud moments throughout the evening and a thoroughly committed ensemble, bringing colour and vivacity to Solly and Ward?s screwball comedy.

Director Gene David Kirk?s lucid direction, his swansong as artistic director for this venue, is complemented by Lee Proud?s bold choreography that mirrors both the romance and the wit of the piece. Boy Meets Boy might not be to everybody?s taste, but there is an unfailing sense of optimism about this show that makes it one of the most pertinent revivals of the year.

Baby girl nearly drowns after falling into toilet

By Melissa Pamer and Sofia Pop, NBCLosAngeles

LOS ANGELES -- A baby girl was recovering at home Tuesday night after falling head first into a toilet and nearly drowning, according to authorities.

The baby was playing with her toddler sister at a home in the?San Fernando Valley?when the incident happened, Los Angeles police said. The door was locked and the older sister was crying for help.

The girls' mother kicked the bathroom's door in, and found her baby girl head first in the toilet,?Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Scott Harrelson told the LA Daily News.

"The mother then kicked the door open and saw the infant head-down in the toilet," Harrelson told the newspaper.

More stories from NBCLosAngeles.com

Harrelson was unavailable to provide details to NBC4 Tuesday afternoon, but LAPD's Media Relations Division confirmed the report.

The child's mother told NBC4 Tuesday night that she is a nurse, and was able to perform CPR on the child.?

"The baby was blue but slightly breathing," Harrelson told the?Daily News. "The officers were able to open up her airways and she started to cry, which means she was responsive."

The baby girl was transported via Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter, which had landed at Sun Valley Middle School, LAFD spokesman Erik Scott said.

The child was hospitalized in serious condition but was later released.

London Mayor mocks France for comments against Lakshmi Mittal, ArcelorMittal

New Delhi: Mocking the French Government for asking steel giant the Lakshmi Mittal-led ArcelorMittal to leave France, London Mayor Boris Johnson, who is on a visit here, today said "sans-culottes"(working class militants) "appear to have captured" Paris.

Describing a 115-metre ArcelorMittal steel tower ? Orbit - at the Olympics Park in London as fusion of friendship between India and UK, Johnson said, "I say this on a day when I picked up a newspaper and I see sans-culottes appear to have captured the government of Paris and a French Minister has been so eccentric as to call for a massive investor to depart".

Sans-culottes were the radical left-wing urban working class who dominated France during the French Revolution of 1789.

The London Mayor was speaking to Indian industry leaders at a Ficci meeting here seeking investment for world's leading financial centre.

French Industrial Renewal Minister Arnaud Montebourg had reportedly told a French daily, "We do not want ArcelorMittal in France any longer because they do not respect France."

The French minister was also quoted as having stated, " Mittal's lies since 2006 are damning (it) "has never honoured its commitments" to the country.

ArcelorMittal has shut down blast furnaces in Florange, eastern France, but wants to maintain its other activities there, reports said.

How to Use Balance Transfers to Eliminate Credit Card Debt for Good

This article was written by Jason Bushey. Jason is the Vice President of Creditnet.com.

Listening to NPR on my way into work yesterday, I heard a a pretty astounding bit of news.

According to a recent report by the credit agency TransUnion, the average American?s credit debt rose nearly 5% from the same time last year to a shade under $5,000. That?s right ? the average American owes creditors close to five grand, and delinquent payments were up a smidge from last year, too. (0.04%)

Believe it or not, analysts actually think this is a good thing for consumer confidence and the economy overall since spending is on the rise. However, it?s certainly not a good thing for individual consumers who are facing some serious debt and snowballing interest rates.

Before you get bogged down by interest rates as you attempt to pay back your credit debt (and especially if you?re at this point already), you should consider transferring your balance to a 0% interest balance transfer credit card.

If you?re not sure what a balance transfer credit card? is or how they work, the idea is simple: Stop paying interest on your credit card bill by transferring your credit debt to a new card offering 0% interest on balance transfers during its intro promotion period.

Think about it ? consumers pay anywhere from 9.99% to 29.99% on interest each month. If you?re the average consumer that owes $5,000 in debt and you?re paying 15% interest, that is $750 in interest alone!

We probably don?t need to convince you what your next move should be?

So now that we have your attention, here?s what you need to do to transfer your balance and save in three simple steps:

1. Devise a plan

The first thing you should do is determine how many months it will take you to pay back your credit card debt at 0% interest. Remember to use realistic monthly payments as the benchmark, that way you can come up with an accurate timeline for paying back your credit.

For example, if you?re sure you can pay $100 a month each month and you owe $1,000, then it will take you 10 months to pay back your credit card debt. Once you get your strategy in order, the next thing to do is choose your card.

2. Pick the right balance transfer credit card

Now that you?re armed with your payment plan, you?ll know what to look for in a balance transfer credit card. If it?s going to take you 10 months to pay back your credit debt, then you need to find a balance transfer card that has a promotion period of at least 10 months. (And to be safe, we would maybe tack on a month or two just in case you fall behind.)

In general, intro periods can last anywhere from three to 18 months depending on the credit card. If you?ve calculated that it?s going to take you a while to pay back your debt, then of course we would recommend applying for credit cards with the longest intro periods. A credit card with an 18 month intro period (for example, the Citi Simplicity? Card) is recommended for such a consumer.

Also ? and this is important ? make sure the balance transfer credit card you?re interested in includes transfers in their 0% APR intro period! While many credit cards offers no interest on card transfers, fewer include them in their intro period. So, before you submit that credit card application, read the fine print and confirm that you won?t pay any interest on your balance transfer.

3. Transfer your balance as soon as you receive your new card

Introductory promotion periods are, obviously, temporary. Make your credit card transfer as soon as you can to get the most out of your 0% intro period. That way, you can stop paying interest and start paying back your credit debt directly from the get-go with your new balance transfer credit card.

Any month you can skip interest fees means more money in your wallet, so there?s no reason to wait. And since it?s the holidays, any additional cash can be really helpful. Just try not go too wild this holiday shopping season.

Need To Find Auto Insurance? These Tips Can Help! | Jim ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Nov 26, 2012 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Auto insurance policies are rife with jargon and complex phraseology. This can make it very confusing. You will be able to understand these terms better after you read this article. Understanding what the terms really mean can help you to make more informed decisions about your auto insurance.

You should understand what kind of coverage you have on your policy if something ever happens. This kind of coverage usually includes medical expenses, but may cover other things as well. However, optional coverages like collision or comprehensive may not be on your policy unless you specifically request them. It is important to see what types are covered with your insurance policy to ensure that it is enough for everything you?ll need it for.

Consider paying the entire annual cost of your insurance at one time. This will save you a service fee that many insurance companies add when you make your payment monthly. Save some money and give the payment all at one time.

TIP! Keep on file all records of all insurance bills you paid. You?ll need your records for proof of payment should there ever be an issue with the insurance company.

Insurance rates are an important factor to take into consideration when purchasing a new vehicle. When you buy a safe car you will be more reputable. Many sports cars are not favored by insurance companies. Remember to include this expense when buying a new car.

Those who do not drive a lot, or who drive short distances, can sometimes get low mileage discounts on their policy. Oftentimes, you will have to drive less than 7,500 miles in a year to avail yourself of this discount. They also have commuter discounts you can look at if you take public transportation to work.

A great way to lower your auto insurance rates is to install a car alarm, a tracker or an immobilizer. Your insurance coverage will also rely upon the theft associated with the model of your car. The more secure your vehicle is from theft, the lower the cost of your insurance will be.

TIP! Learn your state law and regulations in regards to auto insurance. It will also help you to decide on what options you may need to add to your policy, as some states will not require certain coverage.

Know the facts before you let insurance costs deter you from buying the sports car of your dreams. Some of them, in fact, do not. It might be worth calling the insurance agent to see what the insurance costs are for a particular vehicle.

You need to maintain a clean license. If accidents or tickets appear on your driving record, they may lead to your insurance rates going up. If you have had tickets or gotten in accidents in the past, going to driving school may help to lower your insurance rate.

TIP! There are lots of factors that determine the rates you will pay for car insurance. Some of these criteria include whether you are married, how old you are and your gender.

Leave more money in your pocket by choosing a higher deductible. While this means more money spent up front if you are have an accident, it will save money on your premium. In order to make this strategy work, you should set aside enough money for the deductible in case of an accident. If your deductible is low, your insurance premiums will be as well.

Once a family member buys his or her own insurance, make sure to take him or her off of your policy. This will reduce the amount of money you must pay in premiums. If you covered your children on your own policy while they were teenagers, which is a wise idea, your insurance costs will drop when they buy their own policies and get off of yours. Sometimes you will be able to save by reducing the multiple drivers listed on your policy, if you take some off it will save you money.

Make sure you know what coverage types are important when choosing auto insurance. While there are a lot of options available to you, not all of them will make sense. Conversely, if you?ve historically had small accidents, it is probably in your best interest to pay the extra to ensure collisions are covered.

TIP! If you sell a vehicle, or no longer own it for whatever reason, have it dropped it from your insurance policy that same day. Keeping insurance on a car you no longer own can cost you a significant amount of money.

American Tower Buys Communications Site at John Hancock ...

American Tower Corporation (NYSE: AMT) announced today the acquisition of the 93rd and 97th floors and the rooftop of the John Hancock Center in Chicago, IL and the rights to the existing telecommunications leases associated with the property.

The acquisition of the physical space, along with the existing leases, followed the vertical subdivision of the John Hancock Center, the fourth-tallest building in Chicago and the sixth-tallest in the United States. This transaction allows American Tower to make a prominent entrance into the Chicago-area broadcast market, while augmenting its rooftop portfolio in the region. The agreement includes more than 34,000 square feet of space for broadcast and telecommunications equipment, the rooftop and two broadcast masts.

Statement Against High-Stakes Standardized Testing by ...

DEY?s Senior Adviser, Nancy Carlsson-Piage recently initiated a Statement against High- Stakes Testing? which is being signed by Massachusetts professors and researchers.? Below, read a ?call to action? letter aimed at all Massachusetts professors and researchers, explaining the why it is important and how to sign on.

Dear Professor,

There is a new sense of possibility for change in our outmoded high-stakes testing policies, thanks to a growing national movement of educators, parents and students. A National Resolution on High-Stakes Testing has gained more than 13,600 individual and 460 organizational signers. Thanks in large part to testing fiascos around the country, the mainstream press has started to take note and editorials have begun to question this approach to education ?reform.?

Inspired by recent statements by education professors in New York and Chicago, we have written a Massachusetts version of a statement against high-stakes testing that we hope would draw similarly large numbers of signers (New York?s has 1,160 ? http://www.nyclu.org/files/releases/testing_professor_letter.pdf; Chicago?s has 88 ? http://createchicago.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html; a new letter from Georgia professors has 38 ? http://www.empoweredga.org/Articles/greater-support.html).

We would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to review this letter and consider endorsing it. If you are willing to sign this statement, please send an email to matestingstatement@gmail.com with the heading ?I Will Sign On? and your name and position in the body of the email. And if you do endorse it, will you help us reach additional signers? These could be colleagues at your college or at another college, in schools of education or in other departments.

Attached to this message is a copy of the statement with a list of the 32 original endorsers and four initiators.

Sincerely,

?Chris Buttimer, Ed.D. candidate, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Statement against High-Stakes Standardized Testing

by Massachusetts Professors and Researchers

There has been a ground swell of opposition to the overuse and misuse of standardized testing across the United States. This includes statements from more than 670 Texas school boards, nearly one-third of all New York State principals, and hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals who have endorsed the National Resolution on High-Stakes Testing. Against this backdrop, two significant statements have come from groups of educators and researchers in Chicago, Georgia and New York.We applaud these actions and have come together in solidarity with their efforts.

We respectfully present this statement to the Massachusetts Commissioner of Education, the Secretary of Education and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) because you have it within your power to dramatically improve state assessment policies and thereby improve the learning opportunities and conditions for all of our students.? We also copy this to the Governor and key legislators, as they too have the power to enact positive changes.

As educators and researchers from across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we strongly oppose our state?s continued overreliance on high-stakes standardized testing to assess student achievement, evaluate teacher effectiveness, and determine school quality. Given that standardized tests provide only one indicator of student achievement, and that their high-stakes uses produce ever-increasing incentives to teach to the test, narrow the curriculum, or even to cheat, we call on the BESE to stop using standardized tests in high-stakes decisions affecting students, teachers, and schools.

Researchers have documented, and a nine-year study by the National Research Council (Hout & Elliott, 2011) has confirmed, that the past decade?s emphasis on testing has yielded little learning progress. Further, testing experts and the test-makers themselves have consistently warned against using standardized tests for high-stakes decisions such as graduation or retention, or to hire, fire, or reward teachers (AERA, 2000).? The tests provide only a snapshot of a limited range of knowledge and skills, so they can provide only limited information to teachers. Because the tests are not designed to determine teacher effectiveness, no accurate conclusions can be drawn about an individual teacher from her students? test scores. Research indicates that a teacher?s impact on student learning cannot be reliably isolated from the myriad other factors that impact student learning (Baker et al., 2009). Finally, test experts have shown that test scores can be raised without increasing true student learning (Koretz, 2008), and that the higher the stakes attached to a test, the less trustworthy the test scores are.? Cheating scandals in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and dozens of other major cities dramatically illustrate this problem. Problems with the use of MCAS interact with other educational problems, such as continued funding inequities and the growth of poverty within the state (MassBudget, 2012). While MCAS may help identify the consequences of inequities, its high-stakes uses exacerbate these consequences. These MCAS problems include but are not limited to:

Disparate impact on students. Numerous studies document that the use of high-stakes testing ? including test barriers to high school graduation ? bears adverse impact on students and is accompanied by widening racial/ethnic and income-based gaps.? MCAS testing has not significantly reduced disparities in achievement or eliminated gaps, thus the negative consequences of the high-stakes tests fall disproportionately on the groups that most need help. In Massachusetts? low-income, urban districts, large numbers of students perform below proficiency on the MCAS. Twice as many urban as suburban public high school graduates fail college placement tests in math and English and must take noncredit, remedial classes (Massachusetts DESE, 2008). Results on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) show a failure to achieve significant reduction in the achievement gap separating Massachusetts? white students from African-American and Latino students since 2003. The negative effects of our high-stakes testing environment are perhaps most pronounced for English Language Learners (ELLs) ? for whom the tests were not designed ? who cumulatively and consistently fail to achieve proficiency within the limited school time of a year and a day before they are required to take the exam in English. According to a 2011 Gaston Institute report, ?In high school, about 18% of [ELL] students were retained in grade, many of them several times and many of them in the ninth grade to avoid having them fail the tenth grade MCAS graduation requirement.? In Massachusetts, ELLs are, on average, nine times more likely to drop out of high school than their peers. The disparate impact of the graduation requirement on students with disabilities also is striking. For example, of the 2,798 students who did not pass all the required MCAS tests by the end of their senior year in 2011, 75% were students with disabilities. The fact remains that Massachusetts has placed the most severe accountability on the backs of its most disadvantaged students.

Negative impact on curriculum and instruction. Surveys of teachers in Massachusetts (Abrams et al., 2003; Clarke et al., 2003) and nationally (McMurrer, 2007; Moon et al., 2003; Hinde, 2003) show a marked increase in teaching to the test and narrowing the curriculum to tested subjects as a result of high-stakes testing. In addition, research compiled by the NRC and others shows this comes with a negative impact on school climate, often creating an environment of intimidation, fear, anxiety and stress for both teachers and their students, including kindergarten children (Hout & Elliott, 2011). Further, investigators of the Atlanta cheating scandal identified high-stakes testing as a cause of the problem (Georgia Bureau of Investigation, 2011). Under such conditions, it becomes difficult for teachers to create a learning environment that promotes creativity, critical thinking, risk-taking, experimentation and a love of learning. Moreover, as with other negative consequences, there is a disparate impact: teaching to the test, curricular narrowing and damaging school climates more frequently affect low income and minority students.

Negative impact on educators. High-stakes testing creates adverse consequences not only for students but also for educators. Researchers have challenged the validity, reliability, effectiveness, and ethics of using high-stakes test scores to evaluate educators. Further, as argued in an open letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel by Chicagoland Researchers and Advocates for Transformative Education (CReATE, 2012), ?There is no evidence that evaluation systems that incorporate student test scores produce gains in student achievement? [and] Teachers will subtly but surely be incentivized to avoid students with health issues, students with disabilities, students who are English Language Learners, or students suffering from emotional issues. Research has shown that no model yet developed can adequately account for all of these ongoing factors.? Student growth measures are not capable of identifying with reasonable accuracy and consistency over time who is or is not an effective teacher. Already some highly effective teachers are leaving the profession. Further, Massachusetts? new system requires that ?measures of student learning? be developed as part of annually evaluating every teacher in every subject and grade. This could further inundate students with testing and test preparation.

Negative impact on schools. The problems discussed above harm many schools, as well as their students and teachers individually.? While federal law requires assessments, it does not require high-stakes standardized testing. There is nothing to prevent Massachusetts from using a very different assessment system, using multiple sorts of indicators gathered over time, as was proposed in the Education Reform Act of 1993.

Recommendations

Because of these and other problems with the high-stakes uses of standardized tests to evaluate students, teachers and schools, we call on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to:

  • Work with educators, parents and the public to craft a new assessment system that will more fully assess the many competencies our children need to succeed in the 21st century and that will avoid the current overreliance on standardized tests.
  • Stop using MCAS test results as a barrier to high school graduation.
  • Prohibit the use of test scores in educator evaluations and in decisions for hiring, firing, laying off or rewarding teachers.
  • Focus teacher evaluations on the appropriate use of evidence-based teaching practices and a comprehensive set of indicators of classroom and school-based student learning rather than one-shot test scores.
  • Stop using test scores to designate schools for punitive turnaround reform measures that mandate the firing of 50% or more of the staff.
  • Focus turnaround reform efforts on school-wide, research-based approaches.

We know that reforming the current high-stakes testing system will take time and political capital, but we believe that it is not only possible but also imperative if we want to improve the lives of all children and ensure their future success. Given the recent unprecedented attention focused on problems with current testing practice, this is exactly the right time to transform recommendations into reality. Therefore, we make ourselves available to the BESE to assist in these efforts in whatever ways are necessary.
