All-State music festival is a three-day gathering of the best musicians in the state coming together to make music and be taught by some of the best directors in the nation. Great Falls High students were involved in all three sectors of All-State: choir, orchestra and band.
Senior Lydia Brimhall had her first experience at the prestigious festival this year in the choir, ?Everyone was so serious about music. They all worked hard and wanted to be there. They listened to directions the first time and tried their hardest in every aspect.?
The choir was sizeable, with nearly 160 students. Brimhall said, ?It was fun and I learned so much, but there was way more people than I am used to! It was great how everyone worked hard to blend together with so many different voices. It was really important for everyone to pay attention to the conductor.?
Brimhall has the intention of becoming a music teacher after high school and she felt that All-State would help her gain experience, ?I want to work with as many aspiring musicians and talented directors as I can.?
Senior Brian Tremper revisited All-State for the second time this year, participating in the band. ?I do All-State because it gives me a chance to work with people who care just as much about music as I do. I see people who are better than me and it inspires me,? he said.
Tremper has had the opportunity to perform with other musical groups, such as the Great Falls Symphony and the All-National band (a coming together of the best musicians in the country). In regard to how All-State differed from his other experiences, Tremper said, ?This is compacted into two days and you can?t just pretend to know your stuff. Everyone is very good and I don?t often get the chance to work with such great young musicians.
Sophomore Phyllis Jenkins also had the opportunity to participate in All-State, but she worked with the full orchestra. ?My favorite part about my experience was meeting all of these new musicians and these great conductors. I learned a lot.?
Jenkins said, ?We had more challenging music than most groups I have been lucky enough to work with. There were so many more people than I am used to working with.?
The audition has the potential to become extremely stressful for many young musicians. For most of them, it is their first audition they have had to do. Jenkins said about hers, ?I tried out mainly for the experience. I needed to know how to audition, and it was a great opportunity to do so. I was very pleasantly surprised that I had gotten in and it turned out to be a wonderful three days.?
