Orleans Parish defense lawyer arrested in courtroom, charged with ...

An Orleans Parish defense attorney was charged Friday with two counts of stalking after his arrest Thursday inside a criminal courtroom for allegedly badgering a female prosecutor. Maurice Tyler, 40, was being held Friday on $20,000 bond.

A Municipal Court judge also issued a stay-away order. According to a police report, Tyler "has stalked several assistant district attorneys, sent e-mails and telephoned at 4 a.m."

He had allegedly harassed one female prosecutor in particular and was told to have no personal contact with her. But according to the police report, he entered the courtroom where she works on Wednesday morning and began harassing her.

The report did not describe the nature of the harassment.

Tyler, a former public defender,?might be best known for?his early representation of?Michael "MikeMike" Anderson, who was accused?of gunning down five teens?on June 17, 2006 in what became known as the Central City Massacre.?

Tyler?was arrested on a warrant inside the Section I courtroom mid-day Thursday.

The case was sent to Municipal Court, but after a hearing Friday it was transferred back to criminal court. Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro's office filed a bill of information against Tyler on Friday afternoon.

The exact nature of the two charges was unknown Friday.

Several women who work in the courthouse at Tulane and Broad have complained recently -- some quietly, others more assertively -- that Tyler's friskiness had crossed the line in recent weeks, both physically and in revealing Facebook postings.

An arraignment and mental competency hearing was set for Tuesday. A stalking conviction carries a maximum sentence of three years behind bars. There is no minimum.

Tyler was dismissed from his job as a public defender in Orleans Parish in December, 2010. Chief Public Defender Derwyn Bunton said Tyler's firing was a personnel matter that he couldn't discuss.
