Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda are recalling 3.4 million vehicles worldwide ? including at least 1 million in North America - over a defect in passenger airbags, the companies announced Thursday.
Toyota said ?improperly manufactured? parts could cause the front passenger airbag to ?rupture? and ?deploy abnormally in the event of a crash?
Japanese parts maker Takata supplied the airbags related to the recalls, company spokesman Toyohiro Hishikawa said.
Toyota is recalling about 1.73 million vehicles globally, including 510,000 vehicles in North America, a press statement said.
Honda is recalling around 1.14 million vehicles worldwide, including 560,000 in North America, it said in a statement.
Nissan said it is recalling about 480,000 vehicles globally, while Mazda is recalling about 45,500 vehicles, Reuters reported.
The part can be replaced in between an hour to two and a half hours for most models, Hishikawa told Reuters.
He said Takata has been informed of only 2 million global recalls, according to Reuters.
The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear but the Toyota statement indicated the recall may involve a larger number of vehicles in order "to locate the suspect inflators.?
